Think game reserve in South Africa. Better still, think private game reserve. What pops up in your mind? The private reserves and lodges in Sabi Sand near Kruger Park? Timbavati? Zululand in KwaZulu Natal? What about Eastern Cape? Mmmm, not really... Well, perhaps it should, especially if you're heading up the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth from Cape Town.
We've just got back from a shoot at Hillsnek Safari Camp at Amakhala Game Reserve, which lies about midway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. Amakhala was created in 1999 when the owners of 6 lodges (all descendants of original frontier settlers in the area) entered into a joint conservation venture. Amakhala has since expanded to include 10 properties covering 8 5000 ha of Eastern Cape bush, the Bushmans River meandering through the north eastern part of the reserve.
Hillsnek camp is located in a remote corner of the reserve and nestles amongst indigenous bush and numerous aloe species. The 4 luxury safari tents and main lodge have sweeping views over the area and mountains to the west. The lodge has a marvellous homely feel and offers great comfort along with excellent food and service.
We had some really good game viewing during our stay and photographed a range of interesting wildlife and scenic pictures, as well as the lodge interiors and the various guest activities available.
