The Lumix DC-GH5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera from Panasonic are our main camera bodies - the ones that prompted a move from our full frame DSLR bodies to something lighter, smaller and more versatile. They have some incredible video capabilities but lack some of the interesting stills features of the Lumix G9 - also present in our camera bags.
The basis of the camera is a 20.3MP Digital Live MOS sensor and recently developed Venus Engine processor, resulting in some very fine image quality. It can record 4K video at up to 60 fps, 10-bit 4:2:2 internally, Full HD video at up to 180 fps, 12 fps continuous shooting, and sensitivities up to ISO 25600. It has built-in 5-axis sensor stabilisation, working with certain lenses to activate Dual I.S. 2 for incredibly effective image stabilisation that can compensate for up to 5 stops of shutter speed.
What we like:
- Small, light and very portable.
- Combined with Panasonic and Leica lenses it offers superb image quality with low noise.
- The video capabilities are legendary.
- The combination of great stills and movie quality make it extremely versatile.
- That Dual I.S. 2 is very useful generally, but also in situations where tripods are prohibited.
- If you're shooting wildlife, that effective 2 X focal length increase when using M43 cameras is wonderful, our 100 - 400mm Leica lenses effectively becoming 200 - 800mm lenses.
- The camera is very customisable, functionality flipping from stills to movie camera at the flick of a switch.
- Incredible stills AF - both in single shot and continuous.
- Dual card slots.
What we like less:
- The continuous autofocus in movie mode is not the finest. It works but it's not the same as when shooting stills.
- The iPhone app doesn't allow for RAW image downloading (as it does with the G9), which is a shame.
- And that's about it...
Be sure to check out our other Lumix bodies - the G9, the GM5 and the TZ110
