We've only just got the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f2.8-4 - it replaced our much loved 7 - 14mm Panasonic lens so, alas, no pics at this stage. The reason for the change was the 7 - 14 does not accept filters and, via our video work, we often need to use a ND filter. It's a pity, because that diminutive lens certainly fights above its weight.

The 8 - 18 (16 - 36mm in 35mm terms) is a stunning piece of glass, a lot bigger and more weighty than the one it replaces. It has a variable maximum aperture (f2,8 - f4), the usual Nano Surface Coating in order to prevent unwanted ghosting and flaring, and is dust and splash proof. The focusing is completely silent and virtually instantaneous and it produces images so sharp you could almost cut yourself on them. This lens it going to see a fair bit of work, that's for sure.

What we like:

- Super sharp.

- Silent and fast AF.

- Filter threads (67mm).

- Beautiful build quality. - Dust and splash resistant.

What we like less:

- It's not a small lens. The 7 - 14 is tiny compared to this. (Of course, when compared to a 16 - 35mm DSLR lens, it is tiny).

Be sure to check out the other gear in our camera bags.
